Sister Maria belongs to a convent where she is regarded as being well educated in the art of medicine. Along with her vast knowledge and many traits, she is also known for her devotion to God. She spreads the word of her lord in many different ways but none more better then with her kindness. Though Sister Maria is still human and all humans have needs. As she struggles with her deep sexual desires, those very flames are fueled even more one Lucifer temps her into his bidding. He shows her visions of blasphemy, violence and sexual temptations until they become more then just visions, but acts in her case. Those very acts bring her to her knees as her one loving kindness becomes a twisted game of evil intentions. With her growing mount of selfishness for sin blinds her into acts of the flesh both sexually and through death at her hands, she also becomes Satan’s instrument in bringing her convent down.

Certainly one of the most effective nunsploitation films to come out of Mexico during the 70's if not of all time. Rivals that of Juan Lopez Moctezuma’s equally as disturbing ALUCARDA. Using some quite strikingly grim aspects of religion, taboos that especially during the 70's would almost surely ban it’s existence in many markets around the world. Still, though most of SATANICO PANDEMONIUM’S elements are of a fictionist nature, there are several aspects that due ring true, very true. The very fact that many nuns or people of the cloth struggle to keep there human desires at bay and lose. How extreme in many examples one would go to to try and eradicate to save face with God. Like ALUCARDA, SATANICO uses the humanly presences of Satan to temp the body of it’s hidden or suppressed desires.

In the case of SATANICO, that comes in the form of actor Enrique Rocha who to this day is a well known television star on Mexican television. His looks is fitting evil as Lucifer, and his sexual appease towards Sister Maria played by Cecilia Pezet is just as effective. One can not help but point out Pezet’s amazingly strong performance as the scorned nun. Her quick change of good to evil intentions are very convincing as she devotes the bulk of her performance on her decent into complete insanity. Of course that insanity can be questioned as if it were you being tempted by something that looked appealing to you, what would you’re reactions be. She only knows what she is being told or shown, in this case Satan’s bidding. Once again, like many films of this nature there are scenes of lesbianism, torture and shear heavenly pleasure. In the 70's the bulk of this is presented through drug-like psychedelic scenes, group sex and brutal torture all key elements of exploitation.

Still though SATANICO carries a very important message, one that has been brought down from the moment Eve ate the apple, something that is also a tool of temptation to Sister Maria. This film isn’t just some sloppy piece of celluloid that doesn’t have a direction, it is seemingly a vehicle to scare those who might be a devoted followers of Satan. What dangers lay ahead as once too far there may be no coming back. Nonsense really as God is always open for reintroduction, or pay great attention to the ending of this great piece of exploitation. One could gather a few different meanings out of it’s ending other then the one given by director Solares.

Once again Mondo Macabro have picked a rare gem and brought it into a sparkling glory. Like the care they took with SATANICO’S counterpart ALUCARDA, the print has been brought back to life. In a gleaming anamorphic wide screen presentation which looks very clean, quite clear and full of vibrant colors. Of course one can’t go without the other as in the case of the Spanish Dolby Digital audio with English subtitles which is as equally as clean and crisp as the disc’s picture. Ah, but that not all with this offering from Mondo Macabro, there are also a goody bag full of special features to pull up after the discs feature. Starting off with an exclusive and very updated interview with director Gilberto Martinez Solares’ son Adolfo Martinez Solares who wrote and co-directed SATANICO. After that, they dive into the world of nunsploitation with a look into the work and career of Nigel Wingrove (Founder of Redemption/Salvation Films). Rounding out the rest of the disc, there is a stills gallery and trailer for other upcoming or current releases from Mondo Macabro.
