Mother Superior struggles to keep her sanity and her love for God. Though deep within her, desires of lust and fear of damnation creep upon her very vow of chastity. Locked in a room to battle her demons which come to her in the image of an arsenal of judge and jury. Her sanity and chastity is put to the test from none other then Mary Magdalen, the jury being that of the Death Nun, Repression and others. Locking horns, Mother Superior is driven to the depths of despair in recalling several visions of past events that shattered nuns and forced them into desires that would make God cringe. Continuing to scorn the very thoughts of sex, Mother Superior’s thoughts and defenses being to weaken as the battle of wits becomes ever so tiresome for her.
Directed by Salvation Films founder and man main, Nigel Wingrove. SACRED FLESH covers an areas that burns the very flesh of those devoted to the Catholic church and all it stands for. That’s not really saying much these days, for every minute there is a new development unveiled within the very walls of the Catholic church. Things that gradually break down the walls of those once highly regarded as holy figures. Nuns are degraded, priests are continually showing faults, that they too are only mortal. SACRED FLESH dives into this very element, one that not only shocks the Catholic church and it’s followers, but also the video nasty nation in the UK. Heavy for it’s nunsploitation, self-gradifactions, and sexual content, it breaks down ever sacred element the Catholic church owns. Images of nuns hoarding in orgies, playing out their sexual desires and even a female crucified on a cross. The viewer is literally throw into the head and thoughts of a nun on the verge of self-destruction.
The direction of SACRED FLESH is often very slow and talky, leaving next to no room for any given plot. Jumping from a series of scenes with characters unexplained and really giving the viewer little to develop any feeling towards. There is just too much extra baggage left here, especially with many of the supporting cast. Though some of the acting isn’t too bad, over all there is little to be desired in terms of performance. Well, I should take that back, there is quite a lot a great performing on another level. Visuals are quite interesting on all levels, flesh, scenery and generated....did I say flesh? Trippy backgrounds enhance those scenes with Mother Superior butting heads with Mary and the Death Nun. Scripture in many different fonts scramble across the background, and indication of just how confused and frightened Mother Superior really is. Wingrove's eye for soft lighting and nicely lite scenes, so that he knows his stuff. Shame it is all hindered by the week script. Though one would often be warned about the lack of plot or story here, fear not, throw all that away when going into this lustfully delicious opera of female nunneries.
This is the first title released by Heretic Films onto DVD. What a title to start with as well, dark, sexual and very deviant. Symbolizing their very name, Heretic. Presented in widescreen with a Dolby Digital audio track. Both are very crisp, clean and create a great atmosphere for the viewer. Extras include, teaser trailer, stills galleries, story board, audio commentary, and behind the scenes among others. Packed to the brim in goodies. Look out for more great titles coming from Heretic Films as well, I’LL BURY YOU TOMORROW and LONDON VOODOO are next on their hit list!
