This update features a special exclusive Euro Eye look at the late Mel Ferrer, who I've dedicated the piece to soley this time around.

About Mel Ferrer: have you been able to find out anything about a film he did in 1980 called BUITRES SOBRE LA CIUDAD? It's directed by Gianni Siragusa and was apparently a co-production between Italy, Spain and Mexico. The very impressive cast also includes Maurizio Merli, Nadiuska, Francisco Rabal, Hugo Stiglitz, Frank Braña and the irresistable Lilli Carati. I think it's a crime movie but I haven't been able to any information about it anywhere! Seems to be ultra-rare - at least the rarest European film Mel Ferrer ever did. I'd love to be able to track down this flick!

I have not, Johan, although it looks to be a very worthy crime outing definitely warranting a search for. The only films I have by Gianni Siragusa are his two Ajita Wilson WIP's - HELL BEHIND BARS and HELL PENITENTIARY (both 1984) - which for some reason for years have been credited to Sergio Garrone. I'm almost certain Siragusa directed them and Garrone only wrote these final Ajita behind bars flicks.

Anyway, BUITRES SOBRE LA CIUDAD definitely is one that I'd be highly interested in seeing as well. Seems almost as rare as another crime outing Ferrer did with Maurizio Merli - Giorgio Cristallini's I GABBIANI VOLANO BASSO (SEAGULLS FLY LOW) - which I have not seen anywhere either and don't know of any DVD release for.

Yes, you are quite right, Devin. Those Ajita films were directed by Siragusa. I've read an interview with Rita Silva (who played the sadistic warden in both films) and she confirms that they were both directed by Siragusa.

I'm not sure why they were credited to Sergio Garrone instead but this was apparently not an uncommon practice. To site another example, Angelo Pannaccio is credited as the director of CRIES AND SHADOWS (1976) even though the real director was Franco Lo Cascio. I think there may be financial motives at work here. Like with ZOMBI 2, which I think Dardano Sacchetti wrote but it was credited to his wife for some sort of money reasons. I can't really remember the story, though...

SEAGULLS FLY LOW was released on VHS in Greece - dubbed in English. Not sure about the quality, though, and I don't think there are any other English-friendly releases.

Just a little heads up in regards to something I'm hoping loyal readers are looking forward to; that of course being the next installment of THE EURO EYE (the 4th edition, to be exact), which I'm happy to announce will also be a part of the big upcoming February 2nd Nocturnal unveiling.

As is usually the case, I mostly like to keep under wraps who I'll be throwing the spotlight on until the actual day of presentation. I will however say that I always like to mix it up and keep it interesting, so you never know who I'll be bringing out of the woodwork for career retrospective.
