Horror Collections For Easter! - Devin_Kelly - 03-24-2008 06:34 PM
This past Easter weekend, my girlfriend and I both added a couple of those budget DVD Horror mixes to our respective collections. Both come to us from U.S. based company, St. Clair Vision. One of these, which I purchased for her as an Easter present she had wanted, is titled THE ULTIMATE HORROR COLLECTION: SLEEPLESS NIGHTS and contains 20 films, those being:
Volume 1 -
HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959)
THE HUMAN MONSTER (1940)
THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN (1956)
INVISIBLE GHOST (1941)
Volume 2 -
THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (1964)
THE PHANTOM CREEPS (1939)
NIGHTMARE CASTLE (1965)
Volume 3 -
UNNATURAL (1952)
THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1960)
CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)
Volume 4 -
VAMPIRE HAPPENING (1971)
THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA (1973)
WOLFMAN (1982)
Volume 5 -
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)
THE THIRSTY DEAD (1975)
MESSIAH OF EVIL (1973)
Volume 6 -
WHITE ZOMBIE (1932)
THE KILLER SHREWS (1959)
THE MONSTER WALKS (1932)
CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA (1961)
The other I grabbed for myself, is billed as CULT HORROR COLLECTION and contains 9 films, those being:
Disc 1 -
DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT (1973)
MEMORIAL VALLEY MASSACRE (1988)
KILL BABY...KILL! (1966)
Disc 2 -
THE DEMON (1979)
THE HATCHET MURDERS (1975) (of course, this is aka. and better known as DEEP RED or PROFONDO ROSSO - nice to have another variant regardless)
PIECES (1983)
Disc 3 -
SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT (1973)
NIGHT OF BLOODY HORROR (1969)
HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB (1972)
Both sets also contain bonus goodies on each disc including trailers and other added featurettes.
I'd love some comments on any of the films contained in each set. So far from my girlfriend's collection we've watched a fantastic little zombie gem in MESSIAH OF EVIL (original title: DEAD PEOPLE) and from mine, we are in the midst of enduring the mind-numbing caveman slasher, MEMORIAL VALLEY MASSACRE. Some of these I've seen and a good number I have not, so I'm looking forward to periodically checking in with comments on the prints (sometimes these kinds of sets hide the odd widescreen beauty) in terms of quality and lengths, as well as the flicks themselves.
Yep, it's been a good long weekend to say the least

Devin, if you get the chance sit down & watch The Last Man On Earth & then Night Of The Living Dead back to back. It is amazing to see that in fact there was a blueprint before Romero & not everything Zombie that followed in fact started with Night Of The Living Dead. bb

There are some interesting movies in those collections there. Shows the difference in tastes between my brand of movies and BB above
The ones that leap out at me are:
HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB
PIECES (need I say more? - such a masterpiece of a movie)
DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT (I wrote one of my first reviews for CN on this movie - really like it)
KILL BABY KILL (Bava, Blanc, great atmosphere)
HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL - a classic
NIGHTMARE CASTLE - I believe this is a cut variant of THE FACELESS MONSTER, but an excellant movie all the same.
CARNIVAL OF SOULS - I like this film, damnit !
NIGHT OF TNHE LIVING DEAD - not my taste in movies but without doubt classic cinema
VAMPIRE HAPPENING - I saw this years ago and vaguely remember enjoying it
SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA - I believe this a Hammer film - excellent movie
MESSIAH OF EVIL - has lots of promise it just seems wasted
WHITE ZOMBIE - atmospheric and a fascinating little horror flick
And there's some of my thoughts
and THE HATCHET MURDERS is of interest - I don't like English version of DEEP RED but nice to see Hemmings speaking in English.
What movie is THE DEMON? It would be amazing if was an a.k.a. for NIGHT OF THE DEMON - a Bigfoot sort of movie which has never shown up on DVD yet other than a horribly cut VIPCo release.

MESSIAH OF EVIL (1973) - A masterpiece, and I would anything for a good dvd-release of this movie. I've seen it many times on vhs, but I've stopped now because I won't see it again until it's remastered and in good shape.

Kit, someday soon I hope they make a Post Apocalyptic Zombie flick just so I can invite myself around to yours & force feed you with popcorn whilst we watch a doubtlessly Classic movie . bb

Kit,
That film that you were inquiring about - THE DEMON (1979) - is in fact not the Bigfoot gore film (although I'm itching to find that!), but rather a South African/Netherlands co-production filmed in Cape Town and starring the always entertaining, Cameron Mitchell. The story revolves around a masked killer called The Demon stalking and offing pretty ladies while Cameron Mitchell plays an ex-Marine psychic brought in by the parents of one of the victims to track the killer. Apparently Cam's a hoot in this one. Can't wait!
Just spotted him for all of three minutes in MEMORIAL VALLEY MASSACRE (1988) - a film that defies all logic and description and will go down as one of the most life-altering (for all the wrong reasons) slasher films I've endured. Picture Encino Man crossed with a Friday the 13th clone and that still won't help you wrap your head around it.
Take that as a recommendation, by the way

For Cameron Mitchell Greatness catch him in the jaw dropping audacity that is RAW FORCE. A Kung Fu / Zombie / Cannibal / Mysterious Island / Piranha flick that is so bad its Brilliant . bb

Wow BB, would love to see RAW FORCE indeed based on that cover sleeve alone
Interesting tidbit - Not only does RAW FORCE star Cameron Mitchell, but apparently his female co-star from THE DEMON, Jennifer Holmes as well. And get this...also I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE's very own, Camille Keaton - not very flatteringly listed on the IMDB only as, 'Girl in Toilet'.
Gotta see this thing!

Am I the only one that thinks that Cameron Mitchell is a really good actor? Sure, he starred in some amazing crapfests... but I always thought he was a very competent actor.
The last movie I saw with him was From a whisper to a scream, Jeff Burrs great episode-movie. It's from 1985 (but was release in 1987 I think) and Cameron does a damn fine job in that one.
