Though Robbe-Grillet is more of a writer I was saddened to read that he passed away on Monday. He is particularly known for his novels, for having written the screenplay for Last Year at Marienbad [directed by Alain Resnais], and having directed various films - as well being an enormous influence on Nouvelle Vague directors. But most importantly as an intriguing novelist (one of my favourites) - having written novels such as La Jalousie and Dans le labyrinthe.

He died of a heart attack, he was 85. R.I.P.

I had a chance to meet and talk with him in 1976. A modest, witty man amused by life. His own films are very underrated and hard to see. He may have been the most important writer of the 2nd half of the 20th century in that he (along with Butor, Saurette) created a new form of prose writing the "nouveau roman" which has been highly influential. Of his films I would recommend L'IMMORTELLE (1963) and LA BELLE CAPTIVE.
